OUR VIEW: EVE6 provides a much-needed break
Issue date: 4/11/08 Section: Opinion
For those of you who attended the Eve 6 concert this Wednesday, can we just say it was a great trip down memory lane? It took us back to junior high and high school days when the world held less responsibility and the biggest worry in our lives was figuring out who to ask to prom. Life used to be so simple. Now, we have to buckle down and be serious because, hey, if you don't get good grades, get a degree, get a good job and make some decent money, your whole life could end because you don't have enough food to eat. Hard times have befallen us.
So it's natural to want to take a few breathers during the semester to ensure proper relaxation before taking on something like finals in three weeks. We want to say thanks to those who sponsored Eve 6 to come and perform for us. It definitely gave us a break.
This brings us to our main point concerning school activities. We realize we are in an academic setting, so lectures and poetry readings are expected. But what we don't expect is only lectures and poetry readings. What happened to a healthy mix of academic and entertainment to help break things up? ASUSU activities, although frequent, are small and have not been as strongly attended as in the past. And the lectures just keep coming.
So this is what we propose: Cut down on the small ASUSU activities and put that money toward bigger entertainment activities like concerts or dances. The lectures level can stay where it is - sure, there's a lot, but it's expected at a college campus. What we want is fewer but larger entertainment activities. Did you know The Carpenters, Alabama and America performed at USU during the '70s and '80s? Alabama actually came twice, and The Beach Boys even came to perform in Romney Stadium. What's happened since? Why can't we get Lifehouse, an American Idol singer like Chris Daughtry or a country star like Taylor Swift? Anyone would be better than what we have now: not much.
Again, we thank Eve 6 for coming. And next year, our student fees should go toward bringing bigger events instead of small activities that don't carry a large audience appeal.
Then, USU will rock even more.

Now if only they would let us leave the kids table and have fun at concerts. No moshing, no crowd surfing...
For those of us who have been to many rock concerts, we've come to expect a certain experience when going to a show- that means moshing our little hearts out, crowd surfing, and all in all having a fun experience. (Continued…)

Eve 6, that is pretty impressive. But if you want me to actually to go to more concerts, I would like to suggest a couple bands/artist:
Weezer
Jimmy Eat World
Ben Folds
Jack Johnson
Foo Fighters
Just to name a few, I'm sure there are much more to consider. (Continued…)
